2024 has introduced several different trends into the holiday market. You may not have heard of the term ‘sportcation’, but it may be a concept you are familiar with.

Simply put, a sportcation is where holidaymakers make the most of their break and take part in different sporting activities. This could be beach volleyball, water skiing or even cycling. People who enjoy these sorts of breaks are described as having a relactive personality.

So why is a sportcation important, and what is a relactivepersonality?

Why is a sportcation important?

Everyone knows that being active is an important part of having a healthy lifestyle, but modern life means it can be hard to try new sports and find one that suits you. This is where a sportcation can be ideal. You can use this as an opportunity to try something new and learn new skills. You never know, you may want to carry on the sport when you get back home too.

One of the best things about a sportcation is that you can incorporate as much or as little as you like. Making sure you have some downtime is as important as the activities – you don’t want to go back to work feeling more tired than when you left!

There are so many benefits to incorporating sport into your holiday. Fred Sirieix, Good Energy Officer at Neilson Active Holidays, says: “There’s truly no greater feeling than being in the sunshine, moving your body and enjoying an activity that releases endorphins with your friends and family.”

What is a Relactive Personality?

Some people find reading a book relaxing, but others find being active a form of relaxation. These people have a relactive personality – a combination of relaxing and active. Golfing holidays are a good example of holidays for people who have a relactive personality as you spend all day playing golf and relaxing with friends or family.

If you love moving your body and being active, then you should book an activity holiday for your next trip.

How to plan your next sportcation

Before you can book your next big adventure, you will need to consider who will be travelling and the type of sports they will enjoy. Family activity holidays are a great way to keep kids and adults of all ages entertained and happy.

Once you have chosen your activities you can narrow your destination choices down. For instance, heading to a large city may diminish your chances of being able to waterski easily.

Some holiday packages have holiday clubs for children which include lots of sports and activities. If you are more on the relaxing side of holiday arrangements then booking your kids into the clubs means you can relax, and they can run and jump about as much as they like!

If you do find a sport you like the look of, check to see if you will be able to continue it when you are home. Rock climbing, for example, is a popular sport which is now being offered indoors across the country with classes for all ages.
