Days Out as a Family in Bournemouth

•Features review visits•

With summer coming up, and the May half term upon us, I thought it would be nice to round up some of the brilliant amusements and activities located in and around Bournemouth for those of us with children. Whether you are local, and looking for suggestions on days out and about, or visiting the area for the holidays, I hope you can find something you love in this selection.

In the interest of disclosure, I have worked with the places listed for previous review visits, however all words, opinions and images are my own.

Hollywood Bowl Branksome

If the weather isn’t brilliant (typical England), then a trip to Hollywood Bowl is our go-to on rainy days. There are two branches in the local area. We recently reviewed the newly refurbished Branksome branch, which is slightly smaller, and generally less crowded, than the Tower Park branch. As well as bowling, the centre also boasts an amusement arcade, pool tables and on-site bar and restaurant serving a range of hot and cold food and drinks.

Marwell Zoo

A little further afield, but worth the travel. Marwell Zoo is situated between Southampton and Winchester and has a huge variety of animals and birds for you to see during your visit. We visited a couple of months ago and all of us really enjoyed the day out. There is so much to see and do as you go around, and the gift shop has some really lovely, and reasonably priced, souvenirs. Well worth a visit!

Mighty Claws Adventure Golf

Mighty Claws is a themed, outdoor adventure golf course, situated a short distance from Christchurch, just by Bournemouth Hospital. It is such good fun for kids and adults alike, and always a lovely day out. A new venue has also just opened up in Southampton as well.

Rock Reef

Rock Reef is another great activity if the weather is a bit hit and miss, but if it’s nice, you can pair your visit with a ride on the Pier Zip, a zip-wire going from the end of the pier to the shore – it is brilliant for adrenaline junkies. The indoor climbing centre is fantastic fun for adults and children. You are provided with all the safety equipment you require and, after a quick safety briefing, are allowed to explore and enjoy the different climbing walls at your own pace. If you fancy something a little different, you can add the High Line and Pier Cave onto your ticket for additional challenges.

Mr Mulligans

Mr Mulligans is an indoor crazy golf centre offering three different themed courses for you to choose from. Located right in the heart of the town, in the Bh2 Leisure complex, Mr Mulligans is a great place to visit with the kids. Challenge yourselves to a round or two of golf before enjoying some food and drink in their restaurant. Fancy some time together as a couple? Mr Mulligans is open until late and you can enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two whilst going round the courses – the perfect date night with a difference.

City Cruises Poole

Fancy seeing the sights? Why not jump on one of the brilliant excursions on offer with City Cruises Poole? We recently went on the Harbour and Islands Circular Cruise with them and it was so lovely to sit back and enjoy the beautiful views as we sailed around the harbour and small local islands. The children loved it and we will be back to try one of the other routes soon!

Discover Dorset Tours

I have lived in Bournemouth for over twenty years, but I have never really gotten around to exploring further afield and along the Jurassic Coast. Ed and I recently took Cameron out on Discover Dorset’s Jurassic Coast Experience, and it was such an amazing day out!

We were driven out and shown around points of interest by our lovely tour guide Nick, and given plenty of time to head off on our own. We stopped for lunch at a fantastic pub in Corfe Castle called The Greyhound Inn, which had the best burgers. They were delicious! The tour finished with a walk to Durdle Door and back down to Lulworth Cove. The photos I took are lovely, I am so pleased we went!
