Wondering what some of the main trends we will be seeing in gardens across the country this year? It is always interesting to see what trends emerge in the world of gardening as there are new trends each year, which can give gardeners an opportunity to change up their outdoor spaces and elevate their gardens. So, what are some of the biggest trends that will shape gardening this year?

Indoor Gardens

Not everyone has space for a luscious garden outside, but this does not have to stop you! Many people have been bringing the outdoors in over the last few years with house plants creating an indoor garden. If you do have space outside, you could also jump on this trend with the use of a polytunnel or a greenhouse.

Sustainable Gardening

People are becoming a lot more eco-aware and making positive changes in different areas of their lives. Gardening can be a great way to become more sustainable as you can use your outdoor space to benefit the ecosystem, and biodiversity is a great way to do this. This can involve letting your grass grow longer and allowing wildflowers to flourish, as well as growing your own vegetables. You can also plant pollinator-friendly plants to benefit wildlife.

Drought-Tolerant Plants

Summers are becoming a lot hotter in the UK, but this can take its toll on your plants and garden. This is why one of the major trends this year will be drought-tolerant plants. Gardeners will be looking to hardy plants that will be able to thrive during the inevitable heatwaves during the summer months. This will include plants such as:

Abelia x grandiflora
Buxus sempervirens
Ceanothus
Euphorbia characias
Hylotelephium spectabile

Wellness Gardens

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have discovered the powerful mental health benefits of spending time in nature. Therefore, it is not surprising that wellness gardens are now trending. Turning outdoor spaces into peaceful relaxation havens can give people a mental health boost without having to leave the house. This will involve incorporating features that you will find to be relaxing, such as water features, hammocks, and outdoor cooking facilities.

Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening is a trend that is on the rise in cities and anywhere where people have small outdoor spaces. Vertical gardening can be space-saving and add visual appeal to any outdoor space.

These are the trends that will dominate the gardening world in 2024. It is always interesting to see what people are doing with their outdoor spaces, particularly as these trends often reflect what is happening in society. Gardens are important spaces for people, especially in the warmer months, so they will always want to create spaces that are as appealing as possible. Additionally, new trends provide gardeners with a fun challenge to revitalise their space each year.
