The gyms are finally set to reopen on the 12th of April, and fitness lovers up and down the country will rejoice. Before returning (or joining) your local fitness centre, though, you must ensure that the right precautions have been made. Otherwise, you will struggle to achieve the desired results or enjoyment.
So, what steps should be taken? Here’s all you need to know.
1: Restrictions will be in place
There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the same exercises, machines, and free weights that you did before. However, you should know that the gym will be a noticeably different environment. Group classes will be limited to small numbers or completely closed until a later date. Meanwhile, masks need to be worn when walking through communal areas at all times. It is a strange experience that will take some getting used to. If you want to enjoy fitness once more, though, this is your only option.
2: You won’t be at the same fitness level as before
If you have managed to stay fit through home workouts and cycling, that’s great. However, when you return to the gym, you will notice the absence from your favourite machines. As such, do not be surprised if you feel the need to reduce the intensity. This could mean reducing the incline on a treadmill or the weight resistance on a leg press machine. It can be a little disheartening but you will start to rebuild your strength in no time. Focus on bettering yourself now rather than worrying about the past.

3: Self-conscious feelings are likely
Most people have lost a little muscle or gained a little fat over the last year due to reduced activity levels. Consequently, then, you may feel a little self-conscious about working out around other people. Choosing better gym attire, like thin blue line leggings will soon put an end to this problem. More importantly, you must remember that most other gym-goers are in a similar position. Embrace a winning mindset in which you don’t judge others or care about what people think of you. This will allow you to focus on fitness.
4: Peak times may look different
The reopening of gyms is one step on the road back to normality. However, the situation remains a long way away from what it was in 2019. People will continue to work from home while others are furloughed or working out at their local gym rather than the one they used to. All of these issues may result in traffic levels at different times of the day looking vastly different. This will vary from one fitness centre to the next. As such, it may take a little trial and error until you find the best schedule.
5: Your lifestyle choices are vital
In conjunction with returning to the gym, you must learn to focus on other aspects of your lifestyle. Good nutrition and hydration levels will have a telling influence on fuelling your workouts and recoveries. Likewise, this is the time to invest in a positive sleeping habit once more. Otherwise, the progress made in the gym will be undone. Besides, the best results can only be achieved when you invest in a whole lifestyle upgrade. If you are determined to unlock consistent results, this step is perhaps the most significant of all.
