Wedding Wednesday – Behind the Bride – Claire

This week’s Behind the Bride is with Claire from Bumps, Babies, Tots and Teens Mummy Diaries.
Hi Claire, thanks for taking part, when was the big day?
22nd July 2011
Tell me a bit about yourself and your partner. When and where did you first meet?
Myself and Matthew got together in August 2009. I had been on a family holiday to Ibiza with my parents and my 2 sons.
Here I met Matthew’s niece and her family. We got along and realised we didn’t live that far away from each other. Just 15 minutes ‘up the road’. We decided to stay in touch.
When we got home from our holiday myself and Matthews niece stayed in touch and decided to meet up for a playdate with our children. As it was Matthew had just moved down from Scotland and was staying with his niece.
His niece told me this and said that she thought that we would be great together. I thought what have I got to lose? I was a 23 year old single mum.
We met and instantly hit it off. We went on a couple of dates. It took me ages  to understand him as his accent was so broad. He moved in with me and my boys within a month and the rest is history.
How did they propose? Or was it you who popped the question?
The proposal?! Well it was a bit of a join decision. We had talked about it loads. Matthew was always asking me  to marry him in a joking type of way. Then one day we were in the car driving to town when the subject came up again. He asked me if I wanted to get married and I said ‘Why not?’
We went into town and chose our engagement ring together.
Tell me a bit about your big day. Where did you tie the knot? Did you have a theme or a colour scheme?
If i’m honest it wasn’t the wedding we had planned. My mum had booked us a massive wedding at a local hotel and golf club. Sadly my mum passed away and at the time Matthews ex, was causing us some trouble regarding his daughter. Causing a family fall out. Resulting in very few members of his family planning on travelling down to England for our wedding.
To make it fair on both of our families we cancelled the wedding my mum had started to arrange and booked our wedding at Gretna Green, on the borders of Scotland  and England.
We got married in the Old BlackSmiths Room. It was very low key. Only around 15 guests. We didn’t have a theme but my colour scheme was pink.
What was your favourite memory from your day?
My favourite memory of the day was going into our Penthouse suite on the evening after our wedding dinner. Just Me and Matthew. No kids, no family, just us.
We enjoyed a night of drinking cocktails, using room service and the facilities. Knowing that we had done what we had come to do and that was to get married.
Was there anything that didn’t go to plan? Or that you would perhaps have done differently?
Well not a lot went to plan as you have read above. Looking back it was the perfect day, it was just nice. No stress, no fuss and we got did the deed of getting married.
Do you have any advice for future brides to be?
Yes, stand your ground, don’t let anyone ruin your dream day. At the end of the day, the cake, flowers, wedding favours, colour scheme etc, don’t mean anything. It’s all about marrying your soul mate, lover and best friend.
Thanks so much for taking part, Claire. It sounds like it was just right for you both in the end. If you would like to hear more from Claire, have a look at her blog or find her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
