Although it’s cold and dreary out now, spring is just around the corner, with the promise of longer days, brighter mornings and more sociable evenings. Now is the time to be thinking about giving your garden a little re-vamp ready for those warmer days. I’ve put together some tips on how to brighten up your garden on a budget, for those who don’t have a huge amount to spend, but want to get their garden looking nice for the new season.
Let There Be Light
One of the easiest ways to brighten up your garden, you can choose to add pretty lights. Lights are brilliant for adding atmosphere, and allow you to stay outside once the sun goes down – especially useful when you have guests over and want to keep the party going. You can add simple fairy lights, or go all out with lanterns, spotlights or torches. Opting for solar powered lights mean you don’t have the hassle of organising the electricity (or the bigger bill at the end of the month) and allows greater flexibility when it comes to placing the lights around your outside space.
Get Planting
Think ahead and add a little colour to your garden by researching which plants will flower in the spring then get outside and plant your bulbs – future you will thank you for it! If you don’t have the space or green fingers for planting your own, why not consider picking up some potted plants to brighten your garden up quickly and easily? You could even get artificial plants if you are short on space and just want something that needs no upkeep.
Add Seating
Having a space to sit outside can make all the difference, especially when entertaining. Seating doesn’t have to be expensive. Take a look on secondhand sites, or shop the sales. Think outside the box when it comes to outdoor furniture and consider a bench or chairs in place of outdoor sofa sets to keep the costs low. You could even make your own bench using pieces of wood – if you are that way inclined. Search for DIY ideas online to find inspiration.
Consider a Focal Point
Adding a focal point to your garden area can make a big difference to the overall look, without needing to break the bank. Consider a bird bath, water feature or hanging baskets to draw the eye and spark conversation. Look for a bargain online, or consider buying secondhand.
All About the Extras
Talking of secondhand, why not trawl the charity shops to add finishing touches that will make all the difference when it comes to a bright and welcoming outdoor space. Think thick, warm blankets for chillier evenings, covers and cushions for outside seating areas and fun, quirky garden ornaments to add some personality to your space.
Thinking ahead now, and making some small inexpensive changes, can make all the difference when it comes to the spring. Invest in lighting, plants, seating and those little extra to brighten up your garden ready for the warmer weather.
