Lockdown can feel like living in Groundhog Day. With the instruction to stay safe at home, only being allowed to leave the house for a limited number of reasons, including to exercise once a day, it can be difficult not to feel a little hemmed in, especially if you share the house with three rambunctious children, as we do. Getting outside to exercise can feel like a much needed respite from the monotony, during the days of lockdown. If you are thinking of what exercise you could take part in, here are some ideas for covid-friendly activities which will get your heart rate up in the fresh air.
Walking
One of the most popular forms of exercise during lockdown, and a great way to get outside and embrace your local environment, walking can be low impact, if you do not have a very fitness level. You are currently allowed to exercise alone, with your household, with your support bubble or with one other person (socially distanced). Always check the gov.uk website for the most up to date guidance.

Horse Riding
If you are a horse owner, you are still able to visit the stables and ride your horse during the lockdown. It is important to follow strict hygiene measures when sharing any equipment, and to keep socially distanced whilst at the stables, but it is important for your horse, as well as you, to continue to exercise during this time.

Couch to 5k
The popularity of the Couch to 5k app soared during the first lockdown last March. Although it may not be quite as nice weather this time round, it is still a fantastic way to increase your fitness levels, and to keep yourself busy during the weeks of lockdown. I love that you can pick a voice to motivate you along the way – I chose Sarah Millican when I did it, and she was a brilliant companion for my runs.
Home Workouts
Who says home workouts have to be done in your front room? Get outside with a smartphone or tablet and get active in your garden. I love kickboxing workouts, but you can find anything to suit your ability and interests on YouTube from yoga to HIIT workouts. Joe Wicks is back on a weekday with his live pe sessions, if you are looking for something family friendly.

Martial Arts
Although you can’t go to a martial arts class at the moment, you can find virtual classes online, suitable for beginners and advanced students, and you can practise outside where there is more space for the movements involved.
If you are struggling during lockdown, getting outside and exercising, whilst keeping safe and covid-compliant, can make all the difference to your physical and mental wellbeing. Try and look at the positives of a lockdown, and enjoy the time to take up or renew a new hobby, whilst keeping active during the cold, bleak winter months.
