If there’s one thing that most people know about fashion, it’s that certain items cycle in and out of style. While you obviously don’t have to follow these trends, doing so does mean that you’ll have access to more variety, as the market responds to provide people with what they want.

Here, we take a look at plaid shirts in particular. We believe that plaid shirts are indeed back for summer, but it’s important to style them in a seasonally appropriate manner. From pairing with a plain t-shirt to getting some nice boots, here are some ideas to help inspire you.

Pair with a plain t-shirt

In most cases, you won’t want to wear your plaid shirt on its own. This is especially the case during the summer months, when you may want to unbutton the front without exposing yourself to everyone around you.

In most cases, this means wearing some kind of plain t-shirt underneath. Take a look at options from suppliers like Screen Textiles. You can buy a bunch, either in black and white or a range of colours, and use them to complement your plaid shirts as you see fit.

Save it for cool nights

If you’re looking for something to keep you warm on windy summer days, or during cooler nights, then a plaid shirt can be a great addition to your outfit. It’s not quite as full on as a hoody or a jacket, but it does the job of keeping the wind off you and keeping you a bit warmer. You can also find nice insulated options if you want something with a little bit more oomph, it all depends on your requirements.

Plaid & denim

While it’s true that you can pair your plaid shirt with any kind of trousers, we really do believe that there’s nothing quite like a plaid and denim combo. Not only does it result in a robust, tried and tested aesthetic, but it’ll also help you to feel warm and cosy in a wide range of contexts. Whether you want a work outfit or something to go on a nice summer walk, plaid and denim should have your back – quite literally.

Complete with leather boots

No plaid shirt styling guide would be complete without a mention of leather boots. Leather footwear in general is absolutely in at the moment, but we can’t think of a better pairing than a nice, thick plait shirt and some high-quality boots.

There are obviously a lot of different styles of boots to choose from, so you’ll need to do your research. Don’t be put off by high prices either. Unlike most modern trainers, a good pair of boots won’t just last you for a year or two – they should last you for life.

If this hasn’t inspired you to give plaid shirts another go, we don’t know what will. By following the styling tips outlined above, you should be able to find a combo that works perfectly for you this coming summer and beyond.
