Technology has become deeply embedded in our daily lives to the point where it would be next to impossible to remove its influence. It has an impact on everything, from convenient shopping to household security. With smart home devices and AI-powered tools ever on the increase, most of us rely heavily on technology to streamline our complicated lives. It is, for precisely these reasons, vitally important to recognise the benefits and the pitfalls of our increasingly technology-driven lives.

The convenience of smart tech

Smart devices are designed to make life easier, and generally they achieve this. A robot vacuum cleaner is able to keep floors free of dust and dirt with minimal input from us. A smart thermostat can ensure that our homes remain comfortable without manual adjustments. Video doorbells allow us to enhance security by monitoring visitors remotely. All of these tools save time and increase our peace of mind, making them appealing additions to any household.

Equally, AI-powered solutions have made an increasing impact on modern life, allowing us to do our jobs or run businesses more efficiently and receive more prompt customer service. With that said, working with anything other than the best AI tools is prone to inefficiency and unexpected issues. Just as smart devices can have their limitations, AI is only ever going to be as good as the tools that you choose to work with.

The pitfalls of overreliance

Although their benefits are plentiful, smart technologies are not infallible. Many of these devices require a stable internet connection in order to function. If your broadband goes down – far from an impossibility – your robot vacuum may refuse to start. Your smart doorbell won’t stream video and may not ring, and your home security system may be compromised. Equally, software glitches or issues with compatibility may render even the most powerful AI assistants ineffective at an inopportune moment.

A further concern is data security. Many smart devices collect and store personal data and, if not properly secured, can be hacked. Overreliance on automation can also result in a loss of basic skills: when your browser remembers passwords for you, why bother to remember them yourself? This can result in us being underprepared when there’s a disruption to a network which we have no power to repair.

Finding the balance

It’s reasonable to embrace technology. Done in the right way, it can free us up from the busy-work that keeps us from doing things we’d rather do. However, there are some steps worth taking to avoid becoming dependent.

  • Have backup options: If your smart lock malfunctions, always have a key to hand that can close the door against any intrusion. Have a stand-up vacuum in case the robot finds itself bricked.
  • Stay informed: Keep your devices and apps regularly updated and be mindful of any security risks.
  • Set boundaries: Always have some tech-free zones or times of day to allow you to live life without smart tech – it will help in case you need to do so in an emergency.
  • Choose quality: As a minimum, you would want to have heard of the company that makes a device, and it should be well-reviewed. This will make downtime less frequent and easier to discuss with customer services.

Smart tech can certainly enhance our lives, but be aware of the line between being able to rely on it and having to. Staying on the right side of that line can make all the difference.
