When your kids reach that all important age where they can start going to school, their bedrooms need to change a little. Of course, their spaces are going to be different every year as they grow and get older, but the moment academia is on the calendar, it’s important to take that into account.
When you’re going to school five times a week, you’re going to need some space for it at home! And there’s really no better place than their bedroom, which can be customised to your child’s heart content while still being a perfectly functional place. So without further ado, here are the interior design elements a 5+ year old needs in their room.
Somewhere They Can Work Comfortably
If your child is old enough for school, they’re going to need a place in their room in order to work comfortably and effectively. Otherwise they’re likely to just have their bed to rely on, and that can be a very bad idea!
Reading a school book in bed is very similar to getting a bedtime story, and most kids will just fall asleep when trying to study or do their homework if their bed is the only surface.
So get them a desk to work from instead, that’s made for their height and comes with shelves for books and space for containers underneath. This way they can put all the items they want nearby on the desk, and you can encourage them to make the space the exact kind they want to work out of.
Plenty of Storage
Speaking of storage space, when your child starts heading to school and brings home all kinds of new books, folders, and projects, they’re going to need a lot more drawer space to store things.
You can incorporate these things into your room’s design by buying them a midsleeper bed. This way everything can be kept underneath, neat, and out of the way. That’ll mean there’s also a bit more space for toys and games too! And if you’re always asking your little one to get their items off the floor and put them away, this will solve both issues in one go.
A Reminder That Their Room is a Fun Place
And of course, when you’ve moved a new desk and chair into their room, given them a lamp that’s easy on their eyes, and told them they’ve got a corner to do their homework in, it’s important to remind your child that their room is meant for fun too!
Make sure you incorporate this into their new bedroom layout by setting up something like a hangout zone alongside their new working area. This means they can transition from their homework to sitting down and snuggling up with a good book or using up their allotted screen time.
If your child has reached school age, it’s time to change their bedroom round. This will make it a much more comfortable and super cool multi functional area!
