I have been meaning to start pole dancing for a couple of years, ever since my sister bought me a 1-1 session for my 30th birthday, but I kept finding excuses not to start, and then the pandemic hit and obviously it wasn’t feasible for a while. A few weeks ago, I was fed up of not having a hobby, something that brought me joy and was just for me. I love to write, but as I do it as a business now as well, it is less of an escape. So I contacted some local pole dancing venues to enquire about spaces on classes, and Becca from Pole Active came back saying that there was one space available on an absolute beginners class that evening, did I want to join? I decided to go for it, even though my anxiety was going through the roof about joining a class where the rest of the attendees had already met each other and had one lesson together previously.

Becca was so friendly and welcoming, as were the other three girls in the class. Although I was older by quite a bit than the other class members, and feeling a little self conscious about my mum tum and general lack of fitness, I was made to feel at ease straight away, and by the end of the first session, I felt a lot more relaxed and less anxious. I also really enjoyed myself!

The classes are a mix of body conditioning, learning moves and putting them together into a routine around the poles, and I found myself starting to pick things up quicker than I thought I would, despite a severe lack of coordination and an inability to follow somebody else’s lead (I asked for clarity so many times, and Becca was always really patient with me).

By the end of the three sessions (the course is four, but I had missed the first lesson), I was really impressed with myself for being able to hold myself up on the pole without any hands, and I knew I had to go back and do more classes. I booked right away onto the next course, and am so looking forward to learning more moves and gaining confidence and strength as I go along. Becca is such a fantastic teacher, so encouraging, and clearly loves what she is doing, which comes across in her classes. She is patient, kind and a friendly face to reassure you, even as a total novice, when it comes to pole dancing. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher.

I would definitely recommend the Absolute Beginners class with Pole Active, if you are looking to start pole dancing, or find out if it is for you. I am so glad that I took the plunge and went along, it is now my weekly escape from all the stress, where I can learn something new and have fun doing it.

I paid for the sessions myself, all words and images are my own.
