Any piece of jewellery you receive as a gift or buy for yourself will have a meaningful or sentimental value and it’s extremely important to ensure that your delicate piece, be it a necklace, bracelet or ring, is cared for in the best possible way. Good quality jewellery is designed to last for many years but only with the best care will the piece truly shine.

When it comes to caring for your precious piece of jewellery, you should receive specific instructions or guidance from the jeweller. After all, they are the experts in providing this advice.

Here are some general instructions that should be adhered to.

Keep Away from Direct Sunlight or High Heat

The reason for this is that certain gemstones such as topaz and amethyst can become discoloured and dull. Other stones such as pearls can even bleach under the direct glare of the sun. Extreme heat can even cause the gemstone to split or crack which is why care should be taken when wearing your jewellery.

Let Experts Handle Repairs

At times, your jewellery may need to be repaired. For example, a watch may have stopped working and you need a professional to take a look. Please take your watch to a dedicated watch repair shop like Pisa Orologeria for example, where the professionals there know the products well and have the knowledge and expertise to fix the issue with your piece of jewellery. It can be all too tempting to take your watch or piece of jewellery to a cheap store where the knowledge and professionalism just isn’t there, so please take the time to find a trusted and well-respected store, to ensure you receive the best treatment for your jewellery.

Store Appropriately

To keep your jewellery safe from extreme heat or chemicals, anything remotely delicate should be stored appropriately. When you received your jewellery, it’s likely that it came in a dedicated box – when you take it off always store it in its box. If you do not have the box, the jewellery could be stored in an air tight container to protect it from any dirt or grime and to also ensure that you minimise the risk of any scratches or damage to the stones. Ideally, your jewellery should be stored in a padded box to ensure it’s as safe as possible.

Beware of Chemicals

Around the home, there is a very high risk that your jewellery will come into contact with household chemicals such as bleach or disinfectant. It’s vital that you remove all jewellery before coming into contact with chemicals due to the risk of discoloration to the metal or stones. Many chemicals include ammonia which can badly affect delicate materials and vintage jewellery. You should also keep gold away from silver due to the risk of damage or tarnishing of metals.

It’s important to remember that each piece of jewellery is different and has different caring requirements. If you’re unsure about anything when it comes to care and prolonging the lifespan of your gems, seek the advice of an expert or contact a trusted and well-respected online store for any assistance.
