With three kids including seven month old Benjamin who has reached a very clingy stage of his development, it’s hard to remember we’re a couple as well as Mummy and daddy.
Once a month Ed and I try to find a night where we make the effort and go out without the kids. Fortunately my mum lives a few minutes away and is happy to babysit for us, which I know isn’t the case for a lot of parents, we are very grateful and lucky.
When I discovered the new Pizza Express was opening, the latest restaurant to open in the BH2 leisure complex, a date night plan for this month was formed. I met Ed at his work and we headed straight down to beat the Friday night rush.
I’m a huge fan of Pizza Express. If you haven’t been before, as you’d imagine from the name, they have a brilliant range of pizzas on offer, but they also do salads, pastas and an extensive selection of starters and desserts.
The new BH2 branch decor is quite industrial and open plan, which I love. There is a nod towards the local area with the signage around the restaurant, and they’ve kept the design nice and neutral, with pops of colour from the trademark blue water glasses and red pepper mills on the tables. There’s pop art on the walls and the lighting really adds to the ambience, with strategic spotlighting highlighting your food choices (perfect for that Instagram worthy dessert).
Our waitress Dila was so friendly and attentive, and helped make our evening totally enjoyable from start to finish. We decided to go for the sharing Dough Balls Dopio to start, which I hadn’t had before but would highly recommend, they were delicious, and just the right amount for the two of us (although Ed did manage to sneak a couple extra whilst I was busy taking photos). The red Harissa spiced pestorissa especially was incredible and I plan to try and recreate it back home!
For our mains, Ed went for the special – the Zapparoli Romana and I ordered the Diavolo Romana without the Tabasco sauce but with Roquito pearls (I’m a little obsessed with those cute but hot little pearls).
Another thing I love about Pizza Express is their portion sizes – the pizzas were nice and big, so big in fact that I decided to be sensible and asked for half to be boxed up to take home with us so that I had room left for dessert.
Ed wasn’t nearly as sensible and ate all of his, so we decided it would be a good idea to share a dessert. We went for Chocolate Fondant ‘Pizza Express’ and I’m so glad we did as it was quite simply the best dessert I’ve ever had – totally delicious!
I could easily have eaten the whole thing, and very nearly ordered a second but in the end we decided to call it a night and headed back to our car with our takeaway leftover pizza, which we shared in bed whilst watching Netflix – bliss!
