I have loved Freya Ridings music since I stumbled upon Lost Without You during a particularly low point in my life almost five years ago. I fell in love with the haunting lyrics, the beautiful piano melodies and the way Freya has a way of pouring raw emotion straight into her songs and making you feel heard, seen and part of something all at once. So I was ecstatic when the chance came to head along to her Poole leg of her Mother of Pearl tour recently at Lighthouse Poole. I took along my lovely friend Rosie, who is also a fan, and we had an incredible evening at what turned out to be a fairly intimate gig in the acoustically amazing concert hall.
Supporting Freya was Bea, who I had not heard of before but absolutely loved! I find sometimes that support acts get overlooked, and can be a bit hit or miss, but both Rosie and I really resonated with Bea’s style of music and the lyrics to her songs. It was such a good way to kick off the evening.
After a short break, it was time for the main event and Freya took to the stage, almost immediately belting out some of her classic tunes before introducing the new album, Mother of Pearl, which is packed full of beautifully written songs, which were absolutely fantastic performed live with Freya also playing piano and a ukulele at one point – a seriously talented lady it has to be said!
I could not fault the performance, every song was just sensational to witness being performed in front of us. When Freya performed my two favourite tracks from her previous work, Lost Without You and Castles, I was so emotional, being able to be there and see the songs that got me through many an emotional time in my life was so special to me. I am so grateful to have been invited along on the evening, and to have experienced it with a good friend too.
I’m really looking forward to returning to Lighthouse Poole soon for more live performances, and in the meantime, I have been listening to Mother of Pearl on repeat and can confirm that I now know all the lyrics by heart, thanks ADHD! If you get the chance to see Freya perform live, book the tickets, you will not regret it, but my advise is to take tissues, and prepare to feel empowered…
