So, you’ve been together a while. You’ve survived flatpack furniture builds, family holidays, and deciding what to watch on Netflix without (too many) arguments. Now the thought has popped into your head: I could actually marry this person. Lovely! But before you start Googling venues and bookmarking honeymoon spots, there’s one crucial step – talking to your partner about marriage.

And no, I don’t mean blurting it out mid-Sunday roast with “Pass the potatoes… fancy tying the knot?” Let’s go over how to have the conversation with love, confidence, and zero awkwardness.

1. Gauge the Vibe First

Marriage might be on your mind, but has it ever been on theirs? If you’ve never once spoken about the future, dropping the M-word could feel a little out of the blue. Test the waters casually: mention a friend’s wedding, joke about your hypothetical couple goals, or just ask how they picture the future. You don’t need a full PowerPoint presentation – just a sense of where their head’s at.

2. Pick Your Moment (Not the Queue at Tesco)

The setting matters. You don’t need a candlelit dinner, but you do need a moment where you’re both relaxed and not rushing out the door. Think long walk, lazy Sunday morning, or even after a really good date night. Timing is everything. You want them listening, not stressing about an email they need to send.

3. Keep It About Us, Not Me

Frame it as a shared journey, not a solo mission. Instead of “I want to get married now,” try “I love what we’ve built together, and I can see us taking that next step.” It’s about your partnership, not ticking a box on your life goals list.

4. Don’t Make It a Proposal (Yet)

This chat isn’t the big moment. Think of it as the prequel. You’re opening the door to the idea of marriage, not whipping out a ring mid-conversation. Save the surprise for later, ideally with something gorgeous like this oval diamond engagement ring, once you both know you’re on the same page.

5. Be Ready to Listen

Your partner might jump for joy, or they might need time to think. Either way, don’t bulldoze the conversation.  Listen to their feelings, even if they’re hesitant. A “not right now” isn’t a “never,” and the fact you’re having the talk at all is a huge step forward.

6. End With Love (Always)

No matter where the conversation lands, make sure it closes with reassurance. This isn’t a test; it’s a moment of honesty. You’re still a team, whether marriage happens in a year, five years, or not at all.

Keep Cool, Keep Talking

As you can see, bringing up the prospect of marriage really doesn’t have to be so stressful, and you can do it while keeping your nerves and theirs intact! The key is to pick the right time, take it slow and empathetically, and avoid being pushy. It should be a two-sided conversation where both of you are supported and listened to. And when the time does come for that proposal? You’ll both know it’s exactly what you want! Good luck!
