Marketing is one of those things that everyone has an opinion on; they all think their way is the best way, and maybe they’re right, but you know what? You’re the person who is best placed to know your audience and work out what’s right for your business, right? So, although it never hurts to see what the experts are saying, and what the competition is doing, you really should do marketing your way because that is the best way to build a unique voice for your business.

Whether you’re a solo artisan, a start-up founder, or a small team with big goals, promoting your business your way isn’t just more authentic; it’s often more effective. So, how do you cut through the noise and build a marketing plan that works for you? Let’s break it down.

1. Know Your Strengths

A good place to start is with your strengths. If you do what comes naturally to you, then it is always going to turn out better than if you simply do what you think you should be doing. For example, if you’re a great writer, then blogging about things related to your business might be the best way to attract attention, or if you’re a whizz with face-to-face interactions, then pop-up markets or local netowkring could be your best route to success, and what’s more, you’ll enjoy the process a whole lot more too.

2. Stay Local, If It Suits Your Brand

If your business has a physical presence or serves a local area, don’t underestimate the power of good old-fashioned local marketing. Think flyers, posters, local press, and community events. These approaches might seem ‘old school’, but they can build strong ties and word-of-mouth buzz in your area.

When you’re printing materials, make sure they look the part. A decent home or office printer with HP ink can help you create crisp, vibrant marketing materials that reflect your professionalism, without needing to outsource design or print jobs.

3. Let Your Customers Do the Talking

Word of mouth is still gold. Encourage your happy customers to leave reviews, share photos, or tag your business online. Feature their testimonials on your website or in printed materials. A recommendation from a real person can carry more weight than a slick advert.

4. Keep It Personal

Today’s customers are savvy, y’know? They can spot generic, copy-and-paste marketing a mile off. Tailor your messages to reflect your brand voice and values. Share your story. Show behind-the-scenes moments. Be human.

It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being relatable. People like to buy from people, not faceless brands.

5. Test, Learn, Tweak

Whatever approach you take, give it time, but also be open to adapting. Maybe that flyer didn’t bring in leads, but your Instagram post did. Perhaps blogging feels like a chore, but podcasting comes naturally. The point is, marketing is never truly ‘finished’. It’s about learning what works for your business, and doing more of it.

You Do You

It’s your business, so be sensible, but be sure to promote it your way. It’ll be more sustainable, build stronger connections, and quite simply be more you! Your brand, your way!
