Empty nest syndrome is a condition that can affect parents and especially mothers, when their children leave home, typically to go to college or start their own families. The most common symptoms include loneliness, depression, anxiety, and boredom. This situation can be difficult for mothers, as they often struggle to adjust to life without their children.

Here are some tips to successfully combat empty nest syndrome and help you feel better and find purpose in your life:

1. Reconnect with Your Partner

If you have been focused on raising your family for the past few years, losing sight of your relationship can be easy. Make an effort to spend time together by going on dates or simply chatting over a cup of coffee. Just as your children are unto the next phase of their lives, take it as a chance for you and your partner to do the same.

2. Find a New Challenge

A new challenge could be in the form of a new hobby or exercise regimen. Alternatively, you could finally have time to take a course and get into something that has always sparked interest in you. Today the possibilities are endless: there are e-learning platforms like EPICODE for example, that offer a wide variety of courses that can help you explore new interests and develop new skills. Whatever you are interested in, there is a course that will fit your needs and help you gain a sense of purpose.

3. Go on A Trip

Going on a trip can help your mind stay occupied with new adventures. You can do many activities to keep yourself busy while on a trip, such as hiking, swimming, fishing and cycling. Additionally, you can take the trip with your family and friends and reconnect while at it. However, schedule regular phone calls or visits with your family if you plan to take a solo trip. Having solid family support and being connected with your loved ones will help make the situation less hard for you.

4. Focus on Self-Care

While struggling with Nest Syndrome, it is important to understand that our children will come back, and in the meantime, you’ll have more time to focus on yourself. Therefore, be intentional about taking time for yourself, and do things that bring joy to your life. Whether it’s through taking a yoga class, trying out a new recipe, going for walks, or reading your favourite book, make sure to schedule some “me time” every day.

5. Make New Friends and Socialise More

Try joining a club or group that meets regularly or plan outings with friends and family members. You may also consider volunteering in your community. Making new friends and staying socially active will help you overcome feelings of loneliness and isolation and help you adjust to your new lifestyle.

So, have you experienced empty nest syndrome? How was the experience for you, and how did you cope? We would love to hear your story!
