I started a new job in September, and went back to working in an office environment, but prior to that, I spent a lot of the past 18 months, since the pandemic hit, working from home. I am self employed as well as working for a business, so a lot of my time at home has also been spent working on my laptop and or mobile. These are some of the things I have learnt whilst working from home.
A Dedicated Work Space is Vital
I am awful when it comes to working from home. I remember I used to run back to bed and sit there with a blanket over me working with my MacBook on my lap, and it just wasn’t putting me in the right mindset to work. More often than not I was tempted to scroll through my phone or take a little nap, and that isn’t helping anybody! Having a set workspace in your house, preferably with a desk and other office amenities will really help you to get that work mindset and separate your downtime from working. A standing desk is a brilliant investment, as it provides a comfortable and healthier way to work from home. The E8 Standing Desk Pro Series from Flexi-Spot is eco-friendly, sustainable and durable, built to last.

Take Breaks
It can be so tempting when working from home to go and put a load of washing on or put an episode of your favourite tv show on in the background. To avoid distractions, I would schedule in short breaks, where I allowed myself to get any of these things done, before focusing back on my work, which ultimately prevented me from getting sidetracked constantly throughout the day.
Stick to Work Hours
It was also important to try and stick to my work hours as much as possible. I found this much easier once the children were back at school after the lockdowns, as it gave me the kickstart I needed to get on with my day once I had dropped them off. I would then finish when I went to pick them up, giving me that time out I needed.
Learn to Switch Off
Following on from having set work hours, it is so important to switch off from work, when your home is also your workspace. It can be all too tempting to just answer that email, or pick up a call, if you are around your desk ‘after hours’. Pick a time to finish work and then literally switch off notifications for your work at this point, until the next day, as you would when you left the office.
These are some of the things I found helpful when working from home. Since Covid hit the UK last March, there has been a huge increase in people working from home, whether full time or part time and the trend seems to be here to stay. I would really recommend a standing desk, if you are looking to invest in a home workspace which is practical and motivating.
