•Complimentary review session•
Knowing how to swim is one of those life skills that are so important to have, and it is so much easier to learn as a small child than as an adult. Ed and I have been meaning to enrol Benjamin in swimming lessons for awhile as he hasn’t been very water confident. Over the summer, we went on a couple of short breaks away at holiday parks with swimming pools and he absolutely loved going in the pools and attempting to swim. It was clear he was ready to swim but didn’t have the skills necessary for us to be able to let go and let him get on with it.
When South Coast Social got in touch via the Bournemouth Bloggers network, asking whether Benjamin would like to come along for a complimentary swim session with Individuality Swimming & Fitness, a locally based swim school who focus on teaching the individual rather than a one size fits all approach, I knew it was the perfect chance to introduce Benjamin to swimming properly, and to help build up his confidence in the water.
Individuality Swimming offer sessions at a number of venues across the local area, in hotels, schools and leisure centres. Our session was at the Bournemouth West Cliff Hotel, which is located near to Durley Chine, just a short walk from the centre of town in Bournemouth. We arrived a little early for our session so that Benjamin could get used to the pool area, and by the time it was his turn to get into the pool, he was definitely ready!
The teacher, Tom, was so friendly and brilliant with young children like Benjamin, who hasn’t been in the pool without me or Ed before and was a little unsure. Within a couple of minutes, Benjamin was completely at ease, with Tom happily messing around with toys in the pool rather than going in with a strong lesson structure.
I was really impressed with how the session worked around Benjamin, rather than the other way around. I haven’t experienced this before but think it is perfect for a slightly strong-willed child like Benjamin, who wants to swim but doesn’t necessarily want to do what he is told. Whilst having fun, and making use of the toys and floatation devices, Tom slowly helped Benjamin gain the confidence to swim without holding on to him.
By the end of the half hour session, Benjamin was swimming just with the assistance of the floats, without needing to hold on to Tom, and he had a huge smile on his face. I was so impressed that Ed and I are now looking in to booking further sessions for Benjamin, as well as the older children who can swim a little but aren’t confident in the water.
Individuality Swimming and Fitness offer one to one (or two to one), parent and baby and group sessions, as well as adult swimming lessons, aqua natal classes and aqua sensory sessions. Their sessions are competitively priced, taking into account the skill of their swim teachers, who all have a wealth of experience. You can see more information about each teacher on their website, along with prices and clips from sessions to give you an idea of whether it is right for you before you book on.
With locations across Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding area, Individuality Swimming and Fitness are sure to have a class to suit. Benjamin loved his session with Tom, and I am sure we will be back for more lessons very soon.
We were provided with a complimentary swim session for the purpose of this review, however all words and images are my own.
