Press Tickets
Oh, what a night! Last night I was fortunate enough to be invited along for the press night for Sister Act at Bournemouth’s Pavilion theatre, situated just opposite the pier, conveniently located in the town centre. We were told to arrive around an hour prior to the show starting and were treated to a drinks reception with themed cupcakes and a goody bag filled with treats such as sweets and a programme for us to keep.

My mum and I met Jonathan and his lovely partner Gen there and had a nice catch up and a little fun playing dress up in front of the backdrop before heading up to take our seats for the show.
There was a thrill in the air when we sat down as the backdrop for the show itself is bright, colourful and gives a sense of what’s to come. Again, as is often the case with these reviews, I hadn’t seen the show or even the film version before so I had no idea what to expect. There was a bit of a wait to start, I believe there had been technical difficulties, but this was unfortunately not communicated to the audience so we were all left a bit baffled as to what was going on (and worrying slightly that our parking would run out before the end of the show in our case).

Fortunately things got going a little while later and the show was worth the wait. Big, emotional solos and duos were interspersed with bold, electric group numbers. There were a lot of songs, even for a musical, but it was brilliant as the cast were all so talented. Landi Oshinowo in the lead act of Deloris Van Cartier won the show with her fantastic voice, which really shone in so many of the songs across the evening.

The storyline was engaging, and I really enjoyed seeing the character development of the two main female leads (including the awesome Wendi Peters as Mother Superior) throughout. I also loved how Deloris brought the nuns out of themselves. There was a good mix of comedy and poignant scenes, which resulted in an uplifting show that had the audience smiling.

The fight scene towards the end was hilarious with amazing comic timing, followed by a climatic and emotional scene with Curtis holding everybody at gunpoint.
I was really impressed with the finale number, the costumes, lighting, stage set up and of course the talented singing and dancing from the entire cast made for a really enigmatic end to the show, which had the audience up and tapping their feet and clapping along to the beat.

Overall we had a fantastic evening and I would highly recommend going to see Sister Act at Bournemouth Pavilion whilst it is running this week (shows are on until this Saturday and tickets can be purchased online or from the box office).

We were provided with complimentary tickets and a press launch party prior to the show in exchange for our honest review. All words are my own, some pictures kindly provided by Bournemouth Pavilion for use in the review.
