A Little Anniversary Stay

Three years ago I married Ed overlooking the stunning Santorini caldera. It was the most beautiful day and I can’t wait to one day head back there (we were hoping to go in May this year but the universe had other ideas). Because of Ed’s job, we never get the chance to go away for long for our anniversary, but it’s become a bit of a tradition to go on a short break to celebrate.

This year, we headed to Shendish Manor in Hemel Hempstead. We had a one night stay with a 3 course dinner booked and it was lovely to simply get away, just the two of us, for some time together as a couple.

The hotel is gorgeous, set in lovely grounds and with plenty of space to socially distance from the other guests. We decided to have a drink and some lunch in the gardens when we had checked in, and I was impressed with the tuna melt and halloumi fries I had, they were delicious.

Our dinner was also tasty. I didn’t take any photos at dinner because I didn’t want to ruin the mood (believe me, I am always taking photos of food and Ed is patient but hates it). I had the chicken and Ed has steak.

The next day, after a Full English breakfast, we headed into nearby St Albans, which is somewhere I had never been before, and we visited the cathedral and wandered around the shops before stopping for some lunch at Pizza Express.

It was such a lovely visit, and I would definitely head back to St Albans again (I didn’t think much of what we saw of Hemel Hempstead on the way to the hotel the day before though).

On the way back home we took a detour and went to Ham House and Gardens, a National Trust property, in Richmond, on the outskirts of London. It was lovely, although I would like to go back once the house has reopened as it looks like it would be really interesting to look around. The grounds are spacious, and we felt very safe and distanced from others walking around.

We had a lovely break away to celebrate our third wedding anniversary, it was just what we needed after the stresses of this year.
