5 of the Best Ski Holiday Destinations for Beginners and Families

Out of all the holidays we have gone on as a family, something I have never experienced before is a skiing trip. I went along to the slopes on Vancouver Island, Canada once when visiting my uncle, who lives there, but I haven’t actually been on a skiing holiday. We were discussing the best Winter holiday destinations in the office at work recently, and skiing came up. These are some of the destinations that would make the perfect ski holiday for those who haven’t been before or are travelling with children.

France is undeniably one of the world’s greatest ski regions. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to destinations in France for skiing. From Tignes to Meribel, France has something for everyone whether you are an experienced skier, a beginner, or a family with young children. Getting to France is nice and simple for those in the UK, with regular flights available and the Eurotunnel, Eurostar and Ferry offering alternative travel. Looking into resorts in France, Meribel’s Courchevel has won me over with its Michelin-starred restaurants and an Olympic-sized ice rink.

If you are a big foodie, Austria is the place to visit for your skiing holiday. With classic alpine landscapes, Austria also boasts delicious local cuisines to enjoy after you ski. Austria also have short transport times and English speaking ski schools, making it a brilliant destination for first time skiers.

A little further afield for us here in the UK, but Canada is beautiful and definitely one to add to your travel bucket list if you haven’t been before. Having relatives there means we have visited several times, although not for several years, and I would love to experience skiing in such scenic landscapes. Contrary to what you might assume, there are actually several different locations across Canada great for ski holidays including the adorable town of Mont Tremblant in Eastern Canada, a short distance from Montreal.

I have been wanting to visit Italy for ages but I was surprised to hear that it was a popular skiing destination. As well as yummy food and drink, ski holidays in Italy are about quieter slopes and comfortable accommodation. Arabba is a great destination for those who haven’t skied before, with scenic starter slopes and great lift systems. Passo Tonale in Italy is perfect for beginners, with a nursery area for learning and gaining confidence and ski and snowboard schools available.

If you fancy somewhere a little different for your skiing trip, the USA has a whole host of destinations to visit including New England, the Rocky Mountains and the West Coast. Winter Park in the Rocky Mountains and Killington in New England are two of highly rated resorts in the country, both offering something for all abilities, with stunning scenery and activities to keep the whole family occupied during the trip.
