Combatting a Flaky Itchy Scalp

Suffering from eczema, I am no stranger to dry skin but was perplexed to discover my scalp was feeling very dry and scaly over Christmas. My eczema is often aggravated by stress and, during the festivities I was feeling incredibly anxious, meaning both my skin and head were feeling super sore and sensitive.

I was actually prescribed a medicated shampoo for contact dermatitis, which I really couldn’t get on with longterm as it smelt awful so I was intrigued and hopeful when Stature PR got in contact, asking if I would like to try out the Flaky Itchy range of haircare products from Philip Kingsley.

Anabel Kingsley, Trichologist for the brand, shared some insight into why looking after your scalp is so important – “The scalp is the bedrock for the hair follicle, and if it is not in good condition the chances of you experiencing problems with hair growth and health increase significantly.”

Anabel recommends using a targeted anti-microbial shampoo and scalp toner “to help return skin cell turnover to normal”. I have been using the Flaky Itchy Shampoo (£24 for 250ml) and Scalp Toner (£21 for 250ml) and my scalp feels so much better. The products help soothe and calm the skin down without leaving a residue.

I must admit, my scalp isn’t usually something I think to take care of, or at least it wasn’t until it became so sore and painful, but what Anabel says makes total sense. Your scalp is out in the elements, just the same as your skin is and comes into contact with all the same pollutants and UV rays and yet we don’t tend to care for it as we do our skin. And just as your skin is likely to get blocked pores and spots if you are inconsistent with your skincare, your scalp will suffer if you shampoo infrequently. Anabel enthuses that taking care of your scalp will help improve hair’s strength and manageability, whilst also reducing breakage and encouraging hair growth.

I have seen an improvement to my scalp since using the shampoo and toner from Philip Kingsley. Although I did use the medicated products to initially sooth and clear my contact dermatitis, using the Flaky Itchy products has helped to keep my scalp soothed and cared for. You don’t need a lot of product, which makes the Flaky Itchy range fairly economical.

I was gifted the Flaky Itchy Shampoo and Scalp Toner from Philip Kingsley for the purpose of this post, however all opinions and images are my own.
