Today marks the first day of the school summer holidays for us. Cameron broke up on Friday and, after a weekend up north to visit his uncle in County Durham, I can see the long six week holidays stretching out in front of us needing to be filled with exciting activities.
Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m one of the fortunate ones. This year I am on maternity leave, so there’s no issues with finding childcare for the kids. However, with the wedding coming up just before school starts back, we don’t have a lot of money to spend on summer fun for the little ones.
Cameron especially needs to be constantly doing something or he will get restless so, when the lovely team at Laurence King publishing offered to send us the soon to be released book from Snapchat & Instagram sensation Jon Burgerman, I knew it would help keep Cameron distracted whilst I dreamt up our next adventure!
On his social media channels, Jon uses traditional pens along with more abstract techniques using food, animation and digital drawing to produce his distinctive creations and encourages his followers to share their own drawings each day. The book is an extension of this, with the message that anyone can doodle, regardless of their drawing ability.
Cameron’s face said it all when he was presented with the book after school. He excitedly flipped through the pages and happily exclaimed that it had stickers as well (a must have for him).
The book contains around 100 ideas along with plenty of helpful tips and tricks to encourage children to doodle to their hearts’ content. Cameron’s favourite page was the robots, shortly followed by sharks but I have a soft spot for the rainbows page – so cute!
Cameron can get very upset and frustrated if he is bored, so for him this book is brilliant. Whenever he gets worked up or feels tense, I encourage him to reach for his doodle book and he is preoccupied with finding the next thing he would like to draw. I personally love the book too and think it could work for an adult who likes to keep their hands busy.
Jon Burgerman’s Daily Doodle is available from Laurence King publishing from 7th August and is perfect for the long summer holidays whether you plan to stay in the UK or head overseas. We will definitely be packing it in our hand luggage when we fly over to Santorini at the end of August for the wedding. Make sure you keep an eye out on Jon’s social media for a special competition in August with the hashtag #dailydoodlebook competition.
We were sent a copy of the book for the purpose of this review, however all opinions and photos are our own.
