This week I spoke with Nikki from Nikki Swift Designs about her experience of the wedding industry.
Can you please explain what your company does?
I design and make wedding stationery, including invitations, Save the Dates, table plans, place cards, table numbers, Order of Service booklets, favour tags, signs, and more! I have a few set designs that couples can choose from, but the vast majority of my work is completely bespoke. I love creating something unique to fit each couple’s individual theme and vision for their day.
What are your top tips for couples?
In terms of stationery, my best tip is to check how many invitations you really need before ordering… because so many couples think they need to buy far more than they really do. This is such an easy mistake to make, because for most aspects of wedding planning, you need one item per guest – so if you’ve got 50 people, you need 50 meals, 50 chair covers and 50 favours. But you don’t need 50 invitations! Couples and their children will share the same one, which can cut down your total quantity by at least half. It sounds obvious, but this is a really common mistake, so make sure you’ve got the correct quantity and you’ll save yourself a lot of money (and wasted card).
Meeting so many lovely people. I love weddings and the excitement of planning them, so it’s great that I’m able to have a small part in the excitement. Every wedding is different so I love the fact I get to create so many unique designs, particularly when a couple approaches me with an idea I’ve never done before.
Rustic style stationery has been very popular this year – I’ve used a lot of kraft card, hessian and twine, often with lace to add a vintage touch. For 2017, I’m seeing a lot of glitter! Rose gold is really popular.
The most important thing is getting married to your soulmate – everything else is just a bonus. But I do think it’s really important to do your research with suppliers and only book the ones you really trust and get along with. It can be hard to avoid the ‘too good to be true’ offers when you’re on a budget, but finding reliable suppliers will ensure you get your perfect day, stress-free.
What would be your dream wedding venue?
We would have needed a lottery win, but Disney World! I’d love to have a photo outside of the Magic Kingdom castle wearing my wedding dress. I did get a Disney honeymoon though, so that’s the next best thing…
